Although he has kept a low profile in recent weeks, Samuel Eto’o remains a key figure in the development of Cameroonian football. His executive committee at the Cameroon Football Federation (Fecafoot) has made a more or less unexpected request to the Indomitable Lions legend, who has also played for Barcelona and Inter Milan.

Samuel Eto’o, who has been president of the Cameroon Football Federation (Fecafoot) since 2021, could be seeking a second term of office when his current term expires in December 2025. At the Fecafoot Ordinary General Assembly held on 16 November 2024 at the CAF Centre of Excellence in Mbankomo, the members present unanimously expressed their wish to see the former captain of the Indomitable Lions extend his term of office. Convinced by his efforts to reform Cameroonian football, they invited him to continue his work at the head of the body, according to Actu Cameroun.

During his presidency, Samuel Eto’o initiated several reforms aimed at modernising Cameroonian football. Among his notable achievements were the improvement of sports infrastructure, the development of local leagues and better supervision of young talent. These actions have given renewed hope to many fans and players in Cameroonian football, despite persistent challenges such as legal disputes and internal tensions within the federation. But the future remains fraught with obstacles, including ongoing disputes, such as that with former coach Antonio Conceição, which could jeopardise the institution’s stability.

Samuel Eto’o’s ambition to join the CAF Executive Committee

Alongside his national duties, Samuel Eto’o has ambitions to become a member of the executive committee of the Confederation of African Football (CAF). He even submitted his candidacy a few days ago. This dual mission is ample proof of his desire to increase his influence on African football while continuing to work towards the recovery of Cameroonian football.

With the support shown by the members of the General Assembly and the popular enthusiasm surrounding his leadership, Eto’o’s candidacy for a second term seems almost inevitable. But that decision will also depend on his ability to overcome the current challenges and maintain unity within Fecafoot. The next two years will be crucial for Eto’o, who will not only have to consolidate his achievements but also meet the growing expectations of Cameroonians if he is to justify an extension at the head of the national football governing body.
