Two years after the first tensions over his salary demands, Hervé Renard’s name is back in the spotlight of Cameroonian football. The French coach has been free since mid-April after his stint with the Saudi national team and is reportedly on the radar of the Cameroonian Football Federation (Fecafoot).
According to various media reports, including those from CFoot, contact has been made between the two parties. The former coach of Zambia, Angola, Ivory Coast, and Morocco is open to the idea of taking charge of the Indomitable Lions. This possibility revives a discussion that has been around before and sparked a lot of debate within Cameroonian football.

For Samuel Eto’o, president of Fecafoot, the Hervé Renard option has been on the table for a while. The former Cameroonian international had considered handing the national team reins to the French coach after Rigobert Song’s departure. However, that plan fell through as the Sports Ministry ultimately chose Marc Brys in April 2024 without direct consultation with the federation.
This choice highlighted institutional disagreements about managing the national team, complicating the technical issues surrounding the Indomitable Lions. In this context, Renard’s return seems like an attempt to bring more stable and experienced leadership to the team’s technical staff.
However, despite the supposed interest and discussions, several significant obstacles remain. The main hurdle is financial. In the past, Hervé Renard’s salary demands were deemed incompatible with the budgetary capabilities of Fecafoot and Cameroonian sports authorities. Although he has denied asking for a monthly salary of around 200,000 euros, this perception still fuels hesitations.
Beyond the financial aspect, timing is also a crucial factor. The French coach could have several opportunities in the international market in the months following the 2026 World Cup. Top-tier national teams or more structured projects could become available, making an immediate decision less likely.

In this context, the prospect of Hervé Renard arriving in Cameroon seems uncertain, even if it generates real interest. Fecafoot will have to navigate economic, institutional, and competitive constraints to hope to realize such a project.
For now, the situation remains open and subject to change. The coming weeks could shed more light on the feasibility of this option, which continues to fuel speculation about the future of the Indomitable Lions’ coaching bench.
