There is indeed life after Real Madrid… but it doesn’t always match what we imagined.
Over the past thirty years, Real Madrid has attracted many renowned players, often signed for a hefty price. Eden Hazard is one of those high-profile transfers. Arriving in 2019 from Chelsea FC for over 120 million euros, the Belgian international became the second most expensive signing in the history of the Madrid club.
However, his time in the Spanish capital didn’t live up to expectations. In four seasons, he scored just seven goals in 76 matches, a tally far below the hopes placed on him. Officially retired since October 2023, the former winger of the Red Devils chose to stay in Madrid, away from the media frenzy.
In an interview with The Guardian, he describes a simple and peaceful daily life. “My life is quite simple,” he shares with a smile. A father of five, he even jokes about his new role: “Right now, I’m more of a taxi driver than a footballer, but I’m okay with that.”
If he decided to stay in Spain, it’s mainly for his family, but also for the climate and the cuisine he particularly enjoys. At 35, Hazard has a clear view of the passing time: “Life goes so fast, especially in football. Yesterday, I was 19, and today, I’m 35. You have to enjoy it, not just in football, but in everything.”
Despite a mixed Madrid adventure, Eden Hazard will leave a significant mark in the history of his national team and the clubs he played for.
