Real Madrid: New Central Defender

Nico Schlotterbeck has yet to extend his contract with Borussia Dortmund, and his name is increasingly circulating around Madrid. According to the German media Bild, a decision is expected to be made around the international break in March.

Real Madrid is closely monitoring the situation of the German central defender, while talks between Schlotterbeck and Dortmund remain stalled. According to Bild, the player and his club have set March as the deadline to reach an agreement. If no extension is made, a departure could become a real option, with Real Madrid leading the pack of suitors, even though Schlotterbeck is still tied to Borussia until 2027.

Real Madrid : new central defender

The Merengues are still looking for reinforcements in central defense, after several adjustments that haven’t fully met the needs in that position. Dean Huijsen hasn’t convinced, and recurring injuries in this area remain a problem. The profile of 26-year-old Nico Schlotterbeck fits perfectly with Real Madrid’s expectations. The operation could revolve around 45 million euros.

The player’s contractual context makes this case unique: if he extends, his salary could reach around 14 million euros per year, with a release clause set at 60 million starting in the summer of 2027, reduced to 50 million if Dortmund fails to qualify for the Champions League. Without a renewal, a transfer this summer becomes much more feasible.

Several big clubs are keeping an eye on the situation, but the competition seems less fierce than expected. Bayern Munich already has solutions in the center, while FC Barcelona, also interested, is held back by the cost of the operation, estimated at 45 million euros.

For now, Real Madrid appears to be the most credible option for Schlotterbeck, provided he doesn’t extend his contract. The situation should become clearer by March, assures Bild.
