One year on, the final of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar is still causing a stir. In a documentary, Netflix has unveiled some never-before-seen footage of the final, won by Argentina on penalties. The sequence that caught the attention of many football fans concerned Dibu Martinez and Kylian Mbappé.

One year on from Argentina’s victory over France in the final of the 2022 World Cup, new images and videos have emerged of what really happened in this historic match that will live long in the memory. The 2022 World Cup Final ended in a 3-3 draw after extra time, with Kylian Mbappé scoring a hat-trick. Unfortunately, it was Messi’s Albiceleste who prevailed on penalties to claim their third World Cup crown.

One year after this legendary match, Netflix unveiled an exclusive documentary on its platform called “Captains of the World”. It features never-before-seen videos and images from the competition organised by Qatar. The images are so captivating that they give the impression that the World Cup is being played today.

However, one of the sequences in this documentary that caught the attention of football fans was the provocation of Dibu Martinez, the Albiceleste goalkeeper, towards Kylian Mbappé, the triple scorer in the final. As the Paris striker tried to take a penalty during the final, the Aston Villa goalkeeper, who left a bad reputation after that match, approached the Bondynois. He made a visibly obscene gesture with his hip, with the sole aim of disturbing Kylian Mbappé.

But the 2018 world champion didn’t play his game. Kylian Mbappé preferred to just smile and remain professional in the face of Dibu Martinez’s provocations. Naturally, Mbappé did not flinch and converted his penalty, much to the dismay of the Argentinian goalkeeper, who tried everything to destabilise the Blues captain. Mbappé’s goal brought France level at 3-3, and sent his side through to penalties.

Mbappé’s reaction drew respect after the Netflix footage

Since Netflix posted the documentary online, the footage has gone viral, showing just how badly Dibu Martinez behaved during the 2022 World Cup final. Conversely, football fans are bowing down to Kylian Mbappé, who once again behaved like a fairly mature man.

His calmness in the face of provocation with an obscene gesture from Dibu Martinez, his smile, and the way he checked the Aston Villa goalkeeper, made a big impression on fans.

Since Dibu Martinez tried to make Mbappé nervous, but the situation didn’t go the way he would have imagined. In the end, though, it was the Albiceleste who emerged victorious, winning the World Cup for the third time in their history. This triumph enabled him to win not only the trophy for the world’s best goalkeeper at The Best, but also the Yachine Trophy at the Gala that crowned Messi the 2023 Golden Ball winner.

And after the ceremony, Dibu Martinez reflected on the confrontation with Kylian Mbappé. “Did Kylian make me suffer? Yes, there’s a reason why he’s considered one of the best players in the world. I have a lot of respect for him, as a player and as a person. Obviously, some images have been taken and something has been created that has nothing to do with my personality. Kylian is an example to follow. He’s a great guy and he’s already won a World Cup with France, as well as scoring a hat-trick for me in the final. I think he should be proud and so should the French. Is he the best striker I’ve ever faced? He clearly is. When Messi and Ronaldo retire, I think he’ll take over and win plenty of Ballons d’Or,” he told France Football.
