Kylian Mbappé, the PSG star who has been at the centre of a media furore for several months now, has broken his silence on his future. After winning his 16th career title on Wednesday, the French striker publicly confirmed an agreement with Qatar, even though he admits he has not yet decided on his future club.
Kylian Mbappé has just added fuel to the fire. Silent since June about his future at club level, the 25-year-old French player has finally given some clues. Now that the winter transfer window is open and he is finally free to discuss and sign for the club of his choice in January, the Bondyn-based player has made a strong statement that is being met with mixed reviews in France and Spain.
“I haven’t made my decision yet”
Indeed, in the mixed zone after PSG’s victory over Toulouse in the Champions Trophy played at the Parc des Princes, Mbappé, as often very comfortable and grimacing in front of the press, did not escape the hot topic of the moment. Without shying away, the son of Fayza Lamari and Wilfried Mbappé confirmed that he had reached an agreement with PSG boss Nasser Al-Khelaifi, as we previously reported, to protect the club’s finances with regard to his future decision.
“We’re happy to go home with the trophy. I’m very motivated for this year, it’s very important. We’ve got titles to win. We’ve won one and that’s done. I haven’t made up my mind yet (about his future), I haven’t made a choice. With the agreement I made with the chairman this summer, whatever my decision, we’ve managed to protect all the parties involved and preserve the club’s serenity for the challenges ahead, and that’s the most important thing. We’ll say it’s secondary,” Kylian Mbappé began.
The captain of Les Bleus thus effectively confirms that, prior to his reintegration into the PSG team after being sidelined during the pre-season period, he had spoken to Nasser Al-Khelaifi to assure him that the club would not lose out regardless of his future decision. If we recall, the Parisian directors feared a free departure of their star to Real Madrid next June, which would weaken the club’s finances.
“In 2022, I didn’t know until May”
With the deal Mbappé is talking about, which includes giving up his hefty loyalty bonus, it is therefore clear that PSG will have no regrets if their player leaves at the end of the season. For his part, Kylian has given himself the freedom to choose freely and quietly when it comes to his future. Speaking in the green box reserved for the media after the 2-0 win over Toulouse, he said he had not yet made up his mind, despite reports of Real Madrid making a final move for him at the beginning of January.
“In 2022, I didn’t know until May. If I know what I want to do, why drag it out? It wouldn’t make any sense. The most important thing is to win titles, and we have a determined, young squad that wants to win trophies. Nobody talks about my situation at the club, it doesn’t interest anyone,” he said.
In any case, Mbappé has publicly dropped a hint that is likely to cause a stir in the coming hours, days and weeks until the final announcement of his choice. In Spain, as Foot Mercato revealed on Thursday, the PSG player’s exit is causing quite a stir in the media. Many believe that the player’s exit is not a serious one, and that Real Madrid should abandon their pursuit of a player who is overdoing it with the suspense surrounding his future.
Do you think Real Madrid should be allowed to continue chasing Mbappé? Is the PSG player sabotaging his career? We’d love to hear what you think.
