Patrice Motsepe has just resigned: a thunderbolt in African football!

Patrice Motsepe steps down from his executive role at African Rainbow Minerals to become non-executive chairman

South African billionaire Patrice Motsepe has announced his resignation as executive chairman of African Rainbow Minerals, the mining company he founded and grew to a market capitalization of $2.7 billion. This decision marks a significant turning point in the governance of the group and is part of a strategic reorganization.

This announcement comes after new governance rules adopted by the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) took effect. Since the creation of ARM in 2003, Patrice Motsepe has held the position of executive chairman; starting February 16, he will take on the role of non-executive chairman, according to a company statement.

No significant market reaction was observed: the stock of African Rainbow Minerals showed no major fluctuations during the session.

According to Reuters, the new JSE provisions now prohibit chairpersons of boards from holding executive positions. These adjustments are part of a broader review of listing rules aimed at strengthening governance and clarifying the separation of responsibilities within listed companies.

In his statement, Patrice Motsepe emphasized that he will continue to contribute to the development and international competitiveness of the group in his new role.

Outside the mining sector, Patrice Motsepe remains a major figure in South Africa and across the continent: as president of the Confederation of African Football, he continues to play an active role in African sports. Despite speculation, this resignation only pertains to his executive functions at African Rainbow Minerals. Those hoping for his departure from CAF will have to wait a bit longer, notes Shance Lion.
