Seven years after his departure, Hervé Renard spoke candidly and emotionally about his time in Morocco, admitting he probably should never have left the Atlas Lions before his contract ended.
In an episode of the podcast Colinterview, the former Morocco coach (2016-2019) discussed his unwavering attachment to the kingdom. He reflected on the semi-final of the 2022 World Cup, when Morocco faced France in Qatar. At that time, his open support for the Moroccans sparked debate.

Renard explained that he maintains a strong bond with many of the players who participated in the historic journey under Walid Regragui. Happy with their progress, he recalled the intensity of the adventure shared with them and the incredible passion of Moroccan supporters, which was already impressive during the 2018 World Cup in Russia, especially against Portugal.
“I have a part of my heart there. I won’t pretend otherwise,” he stated, expressing his genuine attachment to Morocco.
When asked about any regrets regarding his departure in 2019, while he was under contract until 2022, the current coach of Saudi Arabia was clear: leaving was a mistake. “I should never have left,” he admitted, reflecting that this decision was not the right one.
Just recently, during the final of the 2025 AFCON held in Morocco, Hervé Renard confirmed that he supports the Atlas Lions, proving that his story with the Moroccan national team remains deeply rooted in his heart.
